What hides inside the price

Soldering or welding source

Laser soldering uses a low-power diode laser to melt solder on the joint. Thirteen of fifteen listings we checked were fibre or YAG metal welders. Ask the laser type, wavelength and power range.

Temperature feedback

A pyrometer that reads the joint and controls laser power keeps boards from scorching. None of the fifteen listings mentioned it. Ask whether it is fitted.

Solder feed

Wire feed, paste dispensing or solder balls. Ask which wire diameters the feeder takes and how feed is synchronised with the laser.

Enclosure and laser class

A closed cabinet can bring the machine to Class 1 under EN 60825-1. An open station needs a laser area and eyewear. Ask the class on the label.

The one people forget. The eyewear specification for service work. Even a Class 1 cabinet exposes the beam when opened for service, and the manual must say which eyewear protects at that wavelength.
