Wood planer from China

Wood planer is a search term that returns handheld tools, benchtop thicknessers and industrial double-sided planers in the same list, so the first job is to name which machine you need before any price means anything.

Written and listings checked 1 October 2026. Every figure on this page names its source.

What you are actually comparing.

Two quotes, one machine name

What hides inside the price
01

Surface planer, thicknesser or both

A surface planer flattens one face and squares an edge. A thicknesser makes the opposite face parallel at a set thickness. A double-sided planer does both faces in one pass. Name the one you need.

02

Cutterhead: straight knives or helical

Straight knives are cheap to sharpen and give a smooth cut on straight grain. A helical head carries many small carbide inserts that tear less on figured wood and are turned, not sharpened. Ask insert count and price.

03

Working width

Width is the widest board and the biggest price driver. Industrial listings range from about panel width down to joinery sizes.

04

Infeed rollers

A segmented infeed roller feeds several boards of slightly different thickness side by side. A solid roller holds only the thickest.

05

Table length and rise

Long, flat tables flatten long boards. Ask table length and how thickness is set: handwheel, motor or digital readout.

02

Before you ask for a price.

Send these with the enquiry. Without them, any number a factory gives you is a guess dressed as a quotation.

03

Turn the claim into a demonstration.

Require thisA pass looks like
Plane your widest and your most figured board at contract feed.Thickness even across the width within your tolerance and no tear-out that needs more than your normal sanding.
Feed several boards of slightly different thickness side by side.Every board is gripped and planed; none stops or kicks back.
Plane a long board and check for snipe. No step at either end beyond your tolerance.

04

The documents that must arrive with it.

The one people forget. The anti-kickback description. A thicknesser needs a device that stops a board being thrown back, and a buyer inspecting in a hurry checks the knives and forgets to ask how kickback is prevented.

05

When this is the wrong machine.

Buy something else if

Named, not hedged
01

You need profiles, tongues and grooves, not only flat and square stock.

A four side moulder, which planes and profiles four faces in one pass.

02

You calibrate glued panels wider than any planer you can afford.

A wide belt sander, which calibrates full panels to thickness.

06

Where the numbers come from.

We name the kind of source, how many and when, and never the factory. Listed prices are asking prices, not landed cost. Where we do not hold a fact we say so: that is a GAP, not an estimate.

Straight answers

Questions buyers ask about this machine.

What is the best wood planer from China for a joinery shop?+

Buy the width you plane most and a helical head if you work figured timber. Check the infeed roller type if you feed boards side by side.

Chinese vs European wood planer: what differs?+

Table flatness, cutterhead balance and anti-kickback design. A used European planer with flat tables is often the better buy.

What goes on a wood planer inspection checklist?+

Even thickness across the width, a figured board, side-by-side feeding, snipe on a long board, and the anti-kickback device.

What does wood planer EU compliance involve?+

A Declaration of Conformity under 2006/42/EC, or Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 from 20 January 2027, instructions in your language, and extraction you provide.
