Two quotes, one machine name

What hides inside the price

Cylinder diameter and needle count

These two fix the gauge and the size range. A cylinder for adult sports socks will not knit a fine dress sock or a child size well. Most sock rooms run several needle counts.

Terry, plain or jacquard

Plain machines knit plain and striped socks. Terry cushioning and multi-colour patterns need extra selectors and feeds. Ask what the head knits, not what the range offers.

Toe closing on the machine or after

Some heads close the toe before the sock drops; others leave it open for a linking or sewing step. That step costs a machine and an operator.

Feeds and yarn fingers

The number of colour feeds and elastic feeds limits patterns and cuff structure.

Pattern files

Designs load from files made in the maker's software. Ask whether your designer can produce them and what the licence covers.

Before you ask for a price.

Send these with the enquiry. Without them, any number a factory gives you is a guess dressed as a quotation.

Your sock range: sizes, lengths, plain or terry, and whether patterns are knitted in.
Yarns, including elastane and nylon covered yarns, with counts.
Daily pairs you need, so the factory can size the number of heads.
Whether toe closing must happen on the machine, and whether boarding and pairing are in scope.
Spare needles, sinkers and selectors per head, and your power supply.

Turn the claim into a demonstration.

Require this	A pass looks like
Knit a counted run of each size in your yarn on the heads being shipped.	Length and foot width inside tolerance for every sock measured, at the cycle time written in the offer.
Inspect toes, heels and cuffs against an agreed defect list.	Holes, dropped stitches and open toes at or below the agreed count per hundred pairs.
Load a new pattern file from your designer onto the machine.	The design knits correctly without the factory editing the file.

EU Declaration of Conformity per head, listing serial numbers, under 2006/42/EC until 19 January 2027, then Regulation (EU) 2023/1230.
Low voltage 2014/35/EU and EMC 2014/30/EU references.
Parts book with needle, sinker and selector part numbers.

The one people forget. One declaration per serial number. A single certificate for a container of heads leaves most machines undocumented.

Buy something else if

Named, not hedged

You want to knit tights, sleeves or seamless body garments.

A hosiery or seamless circular machine. A sock head is built for heel and toe, not length.

You want small runs of many designs to test a brand.

A private-label sock knitter. Buy heads when volume in a few sizes is steady.
