Tablet press machine from China

Two rotary presses with the same model code can make very different tablets, because hardness, weight spread and capping depend on frame, tooling steel and pre-compression, and none of these show on a quotation.

01

What you are actually comparing.

Two quotes, one machine name

What hides inside the price
01

Stations against die size

On one frame, more stations means smaller dies: one listing offered 23, 25 and 27 stations with the largest tablet falling from 45 mm to 30 mm. Price the station count your tablet diameter allows, not the biggest output.

02

Main force, and whether there is pre-compression

A pre-compression roller lets air leave the powder before the main hit. Without it, many blends cap at speed. Ask for both forces in kN and whether each is set by handwheel or by servo with a recorded value.

03

Punch tooling standard and steel

Punches are the wear part. Ask the standard (EU or TSM), type (B, BB or D), steel and hardness. If the tooling is the factory's own pattern, every replacement set comes back to that factory.

04

Single or double sided

A double-sided press makes two tablets per punch per turn, doubling the output figure on the same station count. It also means two sides to keep at equal weight.

05

Weight control and reject

A basic press holds weight through cam settings and an operator with a balance. Better builds measure force on every tablet and reject outliers. This is the biggest price driver under one model code.

06

Dust sealing and turret access

Powder reaching cams and bearings shortens their life. Check the turret is sealed from the drive, doors are interlocked, and the turret comes out for cleaning without major dismantling.

07

Drive and lubrication

Ask the gearbox and motor brand, how punches are lubricated, and whether oil can reach tablets.

02

Decode the model code.

Chinese rotary presses are usually sold as ZP plus a number. The number is the station count: punch pairs on the turret. A trailing letter often names the punch type; confirm it, because usage varies. The code does not state output, so compute it: stations x rpm x 60 x compression points per turn.

  • ZP-27 double sided: 27 x 25 rpm x 60 x 2 = 81,000 an hour, matching the listing.
  • ZP-12 single sided: 12 x 30 rpm x 60 = 21,600 an hour ceiling, against a listed 17,200, so the listing assumes a slower turret.
  • Output is a ceiling; your granule may need a slower turret to fill dies evenly.

03

Before you ask for a price.

Send these with the enquiry. Without them, any number a factory gives you is a guess dressed as a quotation.

04

Turn the claim into a demonstration.

Require thisA pass looks like
Run your own blend, or a placebo with the same flow, at the turret speed you are buying. Fix sample size and interval in the FAT protocol beforehand.Every weight sample stays inside your tolerance, and the spread does not widen between first and last sample.
Measure hardness and friability on the same samples and check for capping.Hardness inside specification in every sample, and no capped or laminated tablet.
If you pay for force monitoring, change the fill depth to force underweight tablets. The press rejects them automatically and logs the event.
Remove and refit the turret tooling while you watch.Your operator could do it from the manual, and the time is written into the FAT record.

05

The documents that must arrive with it.

The one people forget. The tooling drawings. Without them, every replacement punch set must come from the original factory, at its price and lead time.

01

Your blend caps at every setting on a lab press, or will not flow into the dies evenly.

A press will not fix the formulation. Granulate first with a high-shear mixer granulator, or fill the dose into hard capsules.

02

You need a few thousand tablets for development trials.

A single-punch or small lab rotary press, which wastes less powder per setting change.

03

You are a licensed manufacturer needing validated per-tablet force data from day one.

Compare a used European press with its qualification history. It can beat a new press whose controls you must qualify from nothing.

07

Where the numbers come from.

We name the kind of source, how many and when, and never the factory. Listed prices are asking prices, not landed cost. Where we do not hold a fact we say so: that is a GAP, not an estimate.

Straight answers

Questions buyers ask about this machine.

Chinese vs European tablet press machine: what is the real difference?+

The frame principle is the same. The difference is per-tablet force measurement, automatic reject, audit trail and tooling precision. For a supplement, a well-built Chinese press with standard tooling can be enough. For a licensed medicine, qualification often decides, and a used European press can win.

What should a tablet press inspection checklist include?+

Station count and punch type against the order, punch and die hardness certificates, guard interlocks, pre-compression working, weight and hardness samples from your blend, turret removal timed, serial number matching the declaration.

What should a tablet press factory audit look at?+

Whether they make turret and tooling in house, how they check punch hardness, and whether they can show a press running powder.

What CE documentation comes with a tablet press?+

An EU Declaration of Conformity under the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC for delivery up to 19 January 2027, and under the Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 from 20 January 2027. A CE mark on a brochure proves nothing; check the declaration and technical file before paying the balance.

Who is the EU importer of a tablet press, and what do they carry?+

The company placing the press on the EU market. It puts its name and address on the machine or documents and checks the conformity documentation. If you import directly, that is you.

What does EU compliance mean for a supplement maker versus a pharma maker?+

Supplements are food law, with contact parts under Regulation (EC) 1935/2004. A licensed medicine maker also needs EU GMP qualification records. The CE mark covers neither.
