What hides inside the price

Castings and their weight

Ask casting grade, machine weight and stress relief. Weight is the cheapest honest proxy for rigidity.

Box ways or linear guides

Box ways damp heavy cuts on steel; linear guides move faster. Both are sold under one model name. Ask which, and the guide maker.

Spindle: belt, direct drive, speed and taper

Ask the spindle maker, maximum speed, BT30 or BT40 taper, and whether the spindle is cooled.

Controller make

Some listings name two controller makes in one title. Write the make and model into the contract.

Tool magazine and chip handling

Count tools, and ask whether a chip conveyor is included.

Before you ask for a price.

Send these with the enquiry. Without them, any number a factory gives you is a guess dressed as a quotation.

Materials: aluminium, steel or hardened steel, which decide spindle and ways.
Your tightest tolerance and the test standard.
